So I sort of understand that one, with the caveat that your breakthrough in chess doesn't actually beat the state of the art. Tablebases I can understand why they wouldn't use them, as it would neither be trivial or as efficient as it is for the current SF system. That SF could be beaten by any of the other top engines more comfortably than AlphaZero supposedly (without any proof or supervision) did, given the superiority of the hardware it used in terms of cost and transistors.Ī0 didn't have an opening book or tablebases either, by the way.

SF on top of that was run on a weak machine with little time and played a lower standard than it does in a normal laptop. A0 didn't have an opening book or tablebases either, by the way. Stockfish without an opening book and no tablebases is very much Stockfish. You mean an actual researcher with standards? yep.

"0" and "mate in # of moves", the evaluation is just an estimate, not a definitive value If you think about it if chess was solved, or you had an infinitely powerful computer, then there should be only 2 evaluations. Maybe SF was just able to sort out promising lines better than Houdini, disregard drawish ones reduce the calculating load, and therefore able too calculate much deeper? But it clearly seems like it is a line where only one way wins (which you only realize after seeing a specific move) and all alternative moves draw. It's still surprising that SF seems to have looked that much deeper. Unlike maybe some other positions where there are more forced moves, and clearly bad ones. I think the problem is that in this situation each piece (besides maybe the pawns) has a ton of possible moves that take a lot of calculating to evaluate and each move just adds exponentially more options. Houdini has a pawn and a bishop for a rook. Seems like a very difficult position to brute force to me.
